Live, Learn, and Contribute
at Hamakua Sanctuary
Aloha and welcome to Hamakua Sanctuary! We are thrilled to have you join our Volunteer Stewardship Program. By giving your time and energy, you are becoming part of our growing 'ohana (family) and contributing to the health of the land, community, and yourself. This guide outlines what you can expect, responsibilities, guidelines, and the mutual exchange agreement.
1 Month Residency

Our 1-month program offers a welcoming introduction to life at Hamakua Sanctuary. Volunteers participate in the daily rhythms of the land — tending gardens, assisting with events, and supporting sanctuary upkeep. You'll have the chance to join community meals, wellness gatherings, and explore the natural beauty of the Hamakua Coast. This option is ideal for travelers, students, or remote workers seeking a short yet fulfilling volunteer experience grounded in connection and nature.
2 Month Residency

The 2-month residency provides an opportunity to deepen your role within the community. Volunteers take on more focused responsibilities based on their strengths and interests, such as event support, permaculture, education, or arts-based projects. Weekly mentorship and intentional group circles are offered to support personal growth and contribution. This residency is perfect for creatives, wellness practitioners, or those exploring service-oriented careers and intentional living.
3 Month Residency

The 3-month program is designed for individuals ready to step into leadership and long-term impact. In addition to daily contributions, residents may mentor new volunteers, co-lead workshops, or design and execute a community-aligned passion project. Upon completion, participants receive a certificate recognizing their stewardship and commitment. This track is ideal for aspiring facilitators, nonprofit leaders, or anyone interested in deeper integration and co-creation with the Hamakua Sanctuary vision.

List Title
Hamakua Initiative
What’s included in my contribution?
Everything. Your contribution covers lodging, nourishing meals, local transportation, guided island tours, and the full individualized Aloha Initiative program. Whether you choose Steward or Visionary, the care and experience you receive is complete.
Do I need prior experience in wellness or permaculture?
Not at all. We welcome seekers of all paths — whether you’re new to these practices or deeply experienced. The Aloha Initiative is designed to meet you where you are, guiding your journey with care.
What happens after the 30-day program?
Your journey doesn’t end here. Every participant becomes part of our lifelong ʻOhana — a growing network of kindred spirits dedicated to living aloha and caring for the Earth. You’ll carry these connections, practices, and values with you long after you leave.
Why are there different contribution tiers?
Every tier offers the same all-inclusive sanctuary experience. The difference lies in how much you’re able to give back. Higher tiers help fund scholarships, sustain the land, and support others in joining the ʻOhana who might not otherwise have the means.
What type of lodging will I have?
We offer sanctuary spaces ranging from shared community rooms to private upgrades (depending on your tier and availability). Every space is clean, comfortable, and woven into the rhythms of ʻāina and ʻohana — designed for rest, renewal, and belonging.
Can I get financial assistance?
Yes. Part of our mission is to ensure that those called to this work can join, regardless of financial circumstances. Our scholarship program is funded by higher-tier contributions, donations, and community support. If you feel called, reach out — there may be a way for you here.
What makes this different from other retreats?
Hamakuā Sanctuary is not a vacation or a hostel stay. It is a living ʻOhana — a regenerative community where daily rhythms, land stewardship, and personal transformation are woven together. You’re not just visiting Hawaiʻi; you’re becoming part of its living breath, Hamakuā — the Breath of God.
How do I know if this is right for me?
If you’re seeking more than a break — if you long for renewal, deeper purpose, and connection to both land and community — this may be the path for you. We invite you to listen to your heart: is it calling you to breathe with the Sanctuary?
How do I apply or reserve my space?
Simple: click Join the ʻOhana and complete our application form. We’ll reach out personally to connect, answer questions, and ensure this is the right journey for you.
